3171.51 3171.51 4 Dichroic Glass... ...requires a complex process, only mastered by a handful of skilled craftsmen. The dichroic coating creates an optical filter that transmits certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. Dichroic glass is created by vaporizing various metallic oxides in a vacuum chamber, using a high voltage electron beam, and allowing the molecules to be deposited onto the surface of a blank sheet of glass. Careful control of time and temperature determines the thickness of the oxide deposited on the glass. The properties that cause light waves to be reflected, while others pass through the glass, create the color shift we observe. Dichroix This process may require 15 to 50 distinct layers of alternating metallic and silicon oxides.
