2 modernism connected the decorative arts with the fundamentalist design of the 1920s Bauhaus. At its core, Modernism embraced the ideology and social ethic of . . ."form follows function." An extension of the Arts & Crafts movement, the key to the Bauhaus idea was its advocacy of machine fabrication as the vehicle to make design available to the masses. Modernism continued to evolve through several iterations morphing through the International Style of the 50s and 60s through late modernism of the 60s and 70s finally emerging as a hybrid of modernism and historical reference in the 1980s as Post Modernism. We continue to develop design and products based upon the Modernist ideals enhanced by technology and a rich pallet of new materials and processes. sculptural modernism evolved from the geometrically austere to a new genre of freedom expressed as sculpturally sensual forms. It was created from a language of curves that flow in a liquid rhythm into shapes that change with the perspective of the viewer. The art of Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao Museum challenged the value system of decades of modernism. This uniquely American attitude represented the first credible challenge, within Europe, to the notion of modernism from the machine aesthetic. "The sculptural approach, as the creative basis of form development, has released the emotional freedom of expression of my early life as a painter and sculptor." warm contemporary describes a confident style of comfort in a bold scale that is uniquely American in character. Built from straight-forward honest forms with warm and relaxed finishes, warm contemporary evokes the pathos of the American West. Modern, and more like Aspen and Telluride than Tombstone or Dodge, warm contemporary has a comfort that is easy to move through and comfortable to live in. transitions implies an aesthetic of contemporary design in which traditional references crossover to connect the contemporary world with the classical. Increasingly eclectic, transitions breaks the rigid adherence to a singular point of view within an environment and mixes adornment with simplicity. The notion of a transitional aesthetic is the basis of Ornamental Modernism which describes a luxurious attitude to contemporary style, eventually becoming known as Art Deco. It represented a luxurious yet restrained opulence of layered complexity that bridged the era of Art Nouveau with Mid-Century Modern. modern lighting essentials ™ . . . a new minimalist collection of functional lighting that is efficient, affordable and easily obtainable. 3171.51 3171.51 4 Dichroic Glass... ...requires a complex process, only mastered by a handful of skilled craftsmen. The dichroic coating creates an optical filter that transmits certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. Dichroic glass is created by vaporizing various metallic oxides in a vacuum chamber, using a high voltage electron beam, and allowing the molecules to be deposited onto the surface of a blank sheet of glass. Careful control of time and temperature determines the thickness of the oxide deposited on the glass. The properties that cause light waves to be reflected, while others pass through the glass, create the color shift we observe. Dichroix This process may require 15 to 50 distinct layers of alternating metallic and silicon oxides.
